PROGRAMS
Community Based Rehabilitation

The Community Based Rehabilitation Program was initiated in 2005 in cooperation with the rehabilitation unit of the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and LNFOD’s four partner organisations. The program focuses on empowering people with disabilities to live independently within their community through training and support networks.
Among other things, it seeks to make the education system accessible to disabled children, improve the competence of health services in dealing with disability, and promote inclusion in the social and labour sectors. Emphasis is placed on ensuring that the program builds on the local structures, public and civil, that are being used to implement general development activities at district level. So far, the CBR program has introduced hundreds of individuals in Mafateng and Leribe districts to self-representation and advocacy training, basic life skills e.g. use of assistive devices and income generating projects.

HIV/AIDS Prevention

Lesotho has the third highest rate of HIV prevalence in the world with nearly one quarter of the adult population infected with the with the H1 virus. It is estimated that rates are higher still amongst the disabled population due to factors of poverty and lack of education and resources.
LNFOD’s HIV/AIDS program began in 2008 and is implemented by LNFOD through its partner organization network. Its key objective is to lessen the spread of HIV amongst people with disability in Lesothothrough education and awareness initiatives. Some of the activities covered in the HIV/AIDS program include translation of HIV/AIDS informational materials in to formats accessible to those with disability, condom usage workshops and trainings on risky behavior and awareness of sexual abuse/exploitation.
